Steps You Can Take to Get Out of Debt
Being in debt is never going to easy and often people feel so guilty that they bury their head in the sand, which causes even more problems (and often even more debt!)
If you are truly facing up to your debt and willing to make a stand and get out of debt then this is a good starting place, for having been in debt myself, I can provide first hand advice as to the steps that I believe helped get me out of debt and other tips that I've been handed from friends and colleagues that have worked.
Firstly, it is a good idea to put together a worksheet (use Microsoft Excel - it's easier) that you can then enter all your debt into and make a budget. In this way, you can easily track your outgoings and trust me you'll be surprised at just how much you pay for that you don't really need. For instance that Starbucks Coffee each morning - make your coffee at home and help yourself get out of debt!
Secondly and this point really does follow on from my first, stop adding to your debt! Ask yourself if you really need the extra pair of pumps or the takeout meal. The list of debt adding products and actions are endless and if you keep on acting the way you always have, you will never get rid of your debt.
Credit cards are a big no no for me these days. They just carry too much temptation and I ended up relying on mine to pay my rent, which is not a situation you want to be in. I cut up my cards so I couldn't use them; one piece of advice here though - do not close credit card accounts as you will need them to build up credit score but there's no harm in not using them till you are debt free!
Becoming debt free isn't easy and it requires huge change in attitude, for instance socializing with friends doesn't have to involve going to bars or spending any money, you can have just as much fun staying in, having games night or reciprocal dinner parties.
Remember there's no point spending money for a short term gain, it will only lead to worry. Don't let your debt rule you - follow the tips I've included above, find your own way, stick with it and soon you will have got yourself out of debt.

When to Choose an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA)?
Explaining the early and late options within debt i.e. DMP to IVA and when to upgrade
When dealing with your debt, it is important to know what the best course of action to take is. There are a number of factors that determine what type of solution is best for you, be it a debt management plan, an Individual Voluntary Arrangement, bankruptcy or debt consolidation, but there are also personal individual factors that need to be taken into account.
One question that is often asked is: 'when is Individual Voluntary Agreement (IVA) best option for me?'
An IVA is a formal agreement between yourself and your creditors and usually proposed for a duration of 60 months (5 years), with monthly voluntary contributions being made. Because of this, a guaranteed level of income is needed to make sure that you are able to meet the contractual monthly contributions for the full term. If you have entered into an informal agreement with your creditors, such as a debt management plan and your situation may now have improved, where your employment is more secure or you have taken on a new job, then an IVA may now be the best option for you.
An IVA stops creditors from forcing you to sell your home, car or other assets. It puts an end to late payment penalties, and puts a cap on your debt so you'll know exactly how much needs to be repaid each month and can start a manageable repayment programme.
Another important factor to take into account is whether your creditors are looking to take action against you. Some types of action that your creditors could take are below:
- Petitioning for your bankruptcy - this could result in forced monthly payments and even the sale of any valuable assets (e.g. your home);
- Court proceedings including:
- CCJs
- Attachment of earnings - where payments to your creditors could be deducted from your salary;
- An application for a charging order where a debt is secured against your property, which could lead to enforced monthly payments. If this was to happen then a creditor could enforce this by demanding monthly payments which if missed could result in the repossession of your property which they would be able to enforce by further applications.
An IVA can provide you with the security which stops your creditors from taking any further action against you through court or from debt collectors, so you can stop worrying about bailiff visits or the possibility of bankruptcy. It includes your loans, credit cards, store cards and other unsecured debts in full.

You Can Say I Have A Debt But I Am Not Ashamed of It
There are several reasons why people resort to borrowing money from others. It may be to finance a very important project such as renovating a house or to purchase a property investment. Whatever the reason may be, it doesn't matter as long as one is responsible to return the money in accordance to the agreement set between two parties: the lender and the borrower.
When a person claims "I have a debt", it means that one is obliged to pay it. One should find a way to eliminate the debt. One was trusted by a person or a financial institution to lend one their money while expecting that one will pay the money back within the span of mutually agreed upon time.
Nowadays, countless people in various parts of the world are using credit cards. They are aware that they will be accumulating credit card debts as a result of using them but even though such is the case, still many people are unstoppable in using these cards. There is nothing wrong in using them just as long as one uses them wisely. Apparently, there are items that are good to buy using a credit that a card holder may be tempted to purchase. In such situation, one should discern and not easily resort to using the credit card to avail of a particular item or items.
Discipline is a characteristic that anyone should possess and use such in managing debts. One should be willing to say no to some expenditure in order to pay the due fees to eliminate them. One should also be able to say "I have a debt but I will be responsible enough to eliminate it." Such is a person that will not accumulate headache, feel anxious, or have sleepless nights because of unsettled debts.
There is always a choice on whether to incur a debt or not. If one is uncomfortable with having debts then one should not head towards that direction in the first place. However if one can tolerate to have a debt, one should ensure that it will be handled responsibly. The key is to be responsible with a decision that one makes whether to permit to have a debt or not. Anyone should not be ashamed to say "I have a debt" as long as one acts responsibly to eradicate it. After all, having a debt is not a really bad move not until one takes it for granted.

Ways You Can Pay Off Your Debts
Pay more than the minimum
First, break the habit of paying only the minimum required each month. Paying the minimum -- usually 2% to 3% of the outstanding balance -- only prolongs the agony. Besides, it's precisely what the banks want you to do. The longer you take to repay the charges, the more interest they make, and the less cash you have in your pocket. Don't play their selfish game.
Instead, bite the bullet and pay as much as you can each month. If your minimum payment is $100, double that to $200 or more. Examine your normal expenses -- you can find the money. Skip eating out at lunch, and bring it from home instead. Eliminate desserts. Give up happy hour. We all have "luxuries," and you know what yours are.
Make a few sacrifices, and you will find the extra dollars needed to increase your debt repayments dramatically. Those increased payments will save you hundreds, if not thousands, in interest payments. Plus, you will get out of the hole you've dug for yourself much more quickly. Is it fun? No. But it sure beats living a hand-to-mouth existence, fearing bills each month.
Snowball your debt payments
Take a long, hard look at all your credit cards. Pay particular attention to the one with the lowest interest rate. Have you reached the maximum limit on that card? If not, consider transferring a higher-interest bill to that one. Many credit cards permit this, and it's positively Foolish to trade an 18% debt for one at 12%.
If your entire balance is too large to fit on one low-interest card, pay at least the minimum amounts due on all of your cards except one. Funnel the majority of your debt repayments into that one credit card, and pay it off as quickly as possible. When the balance on that card reaches zero, move on to the next with the same aggressive repayment plan.
Lather, rinse, and repeat. This method of repayment is aptly called "snowballing." As your debts decrease, the amount of money you have to attack them increases. Your payments snowball until all of your debt is pummeled. Pretty neat, eh?
Another way to transfer higher-interest debt to a lower-interest card is to take advantage of the promotional offers many banks use to entice you to their line of credit. You've seen the come-ons. "Transfer all your credit card balances to us, and pay just 5.9% until next January." It could be worth it. Moving to 5.9% from 18% interest could mean substantial dollars to you. And the money saved in interest could then be applied toward the principal each month, thus reducing your outstanding debt balance even further.
Take care, though, before you act. Examine the offer closely. Look for the hooks. Will the interest rate after the introductory period be higher than you're paying now? If so, you may have to switch again at that time. That, in turn, could give rise to another surprise. Banks have caught onto the charge card hoppers who switch from card to card to take advantage of the low introductory rates. Many of these offers now stipulate that if you transfer balances from the new card within a 12-month period, the normal interest rate will be applied to all outstanding balances retroactively. That proviso could be a bitter pill to swallow for someone short on cash, and it certainly doesn't help the debt repayment schedule. Read the fine print, Fool.

How Debt Consolidation Helps You Save Money
In times of financial difficulty, every penny counts. One of the most discouraging aspects of debt repayment is without a doubt the impact of interest rates on your overall debt.
It comes as no surprise that credit card companies are less interested in their customers fully repaying their debt than in the accumulation of interest that comes with making minimum payments every month.
These interest rates are designed to slow down the rate at which you repay your credit card debt; while the convenience of a credit card is indisputable, the lower interest or fixed interest loan that is recommended for debt consolidation can save you a high percentage of interest.
Debt consolidation is essentially a transfer of your various loans to a single, fixed interest loan. While this obviously affords you the convenience of paying off a single loan with a single interest rate, the most compelling advantage of debt consolidation is the money you automatically save on interest rates. This benefit is truly far-reaching: with a lower interest rate, your monthly payments are more effective -by paying off your debt rather than paying off high interest rates, not only do you repay your debt faster, but you also end up paying less overall.
But choosing the right low- or fixed-interest loan and devising a realistic but effective payment plan is not intuitive, and rarely simple. Debt consolidation is a strategic solution whose efficacy in the long run will be significantly improved by the professional guidance of an experienced trustee.
Debt consolidation is a long-term plan for debt repayment which is most effective when devised with a payment plan in mind. Determining the type of payment plan that suits your income and expenditures, as well as your financial goals is usually one of the most important factors in selecting a fixed-rate loan; it is also one of the most neglected.
A bankruptcy trustee's experience inevitably plays a major role in identifying both your priorities and the reality of your financial obligations. Without this guidance, it is possible for debt consolidation to result in yet another loan treated as disposable income, which temporarily pays off other forms of debt -thereby perpetuating the vicious circle.
The money saved by consolidating your debt can be the difference between paying off your debt and filing for bankruptcy. What's more, when planned correctly, it is an outline of the steps that lead you out of your current financial crisis -no small privilege for those of us who feel both lost and overwhelmed by our financial woes.

How I Paid Off My Credit Card Debt
I had four cards with balances under $500, one with a $3000 balance and the highest interest rate, and another card with around $1500 no interest until 9 months later. After setting up my budget (and taking all of my credit cards out of my wallet so I would not use them), I decided that I could pay an extra $350 a month towards the credit card bills (All the minimum payments had already been accounted for in my budget).
The first thing I did was plan out the payment of the NO interest credit card. I set the balance as being paid off a full month before the no interest period ended. For some reason it appealed to me not paying that company any interest even though I would have paid less interest in the long run had I paid this one last. So, to make it simple I put 1-9 into a spreadsheet column representing the months. Then I put $0 next to the 8 and then $350 next to the seven, $700 next to the six... etc until I hit $1500. On month 4 the total was $1400. Therefore, for months 1 and 2 I could put the $350 a month to any other debts and I had an additional $250 on month 3 because I had to pay $100 to the no interest card that month.
I was able to pay off three of the four smaller cards in those first few months before tackling the no interest card. I preferred this method not only because of the psychological benefits, but I also had three less bills to worry about paying. After the no interest card was paid off, the final small balance card was paid off the next month and I was down to one credit card payment. After that, I paid off the $3000 balance credit card.
To me the stress level decreased the fewer bills I had to worry about. That is the main reason I choose this method instead of paying off the highest interest rate cards first as many suggest. If I had it all to do over again, I would not have run up any credit card debt to begin with. Now, I only use my credit card to make online transaction for security purposes and I pay them off as soon as I receive whatever it was I ordered and approve of the product condition.

Money Risk Management
Money management is risk management. It is much more than that. Poor money management can turn a profitable system into losses. It is the most significant part of any trading system. It is a thermostat - a control system for risk that keeps your trading within the comfort zone. Money management is a big area, and can be confusing if you're just starting out in trading.
Money risk management is simply the practice of how you allocate your money to certain trades or trading systems. It is a critical point that shows difference between winners and losers. It is becoming more important in today's downward spiraling economy. Money management is a set of rules and guidelines that enables you to turn a profit.
Money risk management is far harder in my view than picking trend direction. It is a term that has different meanings depending upon which players you are talking with. It is the strategy for increasing and decreasing your position as your account moves up and down. It is also the way that you maximize your profits when you're in on a winning trade. Money management is a powerful tool when an individual has an edge.

Grabbing Success From Debt - A Sidenote About Credit Counseling
Most people are wondering how to become successful despite the overwhelming debts that they have. Majority of us, credit card holders, are often anxious about our credit scores. Without proper debt management or perhaps credit counseling, we may fall into dilemma that most people have experienced - being deeply indebted. It is very hard to cover up once we are almost drowned in debt. In times like these, we need the help of an expert credit counselor.
When I got my first credit card, I was so excited that I wanted to pay everything that I need through it though I have cash. I seemed to be able to handle things at first but after few months I lost control of my spending. I have been spending beyond my earnings. Since I was very busy during those days, I was not able to check my credit score. It was so bad that after about a year my credit score has gone low.
I started to hold things up. I began to live a very simple life trying not to spend a penny a day but it still didn't work. I needed to ask for help. I started to look for solutions online and it seemed that I get no answers from forums and other group discussions until I decided to search for possible credit counselor or credit counseling service in my area. I was so happy that they were able to help me even though I was not talking to them in person. They helped me through the process online and everything seemed to work like magic.
My credit counselors worked with me in creating a working debt management plan and they also negotiated with the creditors to ensure that I could really pay on time and that I would not be paying the compounded rate that I was supposed to pay. The main thing that must be checked out when looking for a reliable credit counselor is to look for some companies or organizations that have good reviews and have been known for the services that they offer. They may be a bit expensive at times but they are worth the price.
Consequently, everything that failed should be a lesson learned and never go back to the same experience again. Experiences of other people can be a good guiding lesson that we must follow. Had I read about handling credit cards wisely before, I may not fall into this problem. But anyhow, I really learned a lot from it and I wanted to share the same experience that more people may avoid what had happened to me. Furthermore, I would just like to say that seeking help from credit counseling service really works most of the time!

Paying Your Debt In 5 Easy Steps
The growing issues of national and personal debts can be intimidating. But people need to understand that debts are not really a bad thing, they are essential especially if you are an entrepreneur, but they need to be managed well. Before you learn and start how to handle or manage your debts, you have to first understand the different kinds of debts:
Good debts - debts or borrowed money that was used for business or investment purposes. Any loan made for this reason is considered "good" because the business itself can pay for the money, on top of your active income from work. (Unless of course, the business failed)
Bad debts - debts made for other reasons such as educational loans, house or car loans, credit card purchases of your new phone, new television or even your weekly grocery. This credit will be paid from your active income that is why it is called bad or hard debt.
Debts can be worrisome and may cause distress to you and your family. If not properly taken cared of, they can be a real problem. Here are some tips that you can follow so that you can easily manage and pay off your debts:
Identify what kind of debt or debts you have. If you have a good debt and your business is still running then, you will pay that debt from your business alone. If on the other hand, you are not in business, then just tally your loans and see how much you need to pay.
If you have mounting credit card bills, try negotiating with the bank. They usually offer smaller installments and smaller interest rates. Ask your banks what they can offer to help you pay off your debt easily. They usually give better payment terms.
Allot a percentage of your monthly income for debt payments, about 30 percent. If you feel that your salary is not enough to cover for your necessities plus debt payments, then you need to consider getting another source of income -- possibly a home based business, a part-time job or a freelance position.
Do keep in contact with your creditors. Whether they are private lending companies or family and friends, they need to be assured that you have every intention to pay for your loans. Integrity is really important.
You can try borrowing the total amount, pay off your creditors and have a clearer plan on how you can pay for this new debt. This is like debt consolidation on a small-scale. But this should be your last option as it might be a start of another set of problems.
The idea here is simple, pay off the small amounts first and renegotiate the bigger amounts. Get another source of income (preferably a part-time business) so that you do not need to tighten your belt even more. The next time to think of getting a loan, ask yourself if it is a good debt or a bad debt. Go ahead if it is a good debt, if it is a bad debt, think twice, if not thrice. Handling you money must become a habit. It is not easy, but it is doable.

Common Debts For Negotiation
While there are many different types of debts, not all are equally negotiable. In fact, some debts are easily negotiated with creditors, while others may meet staunch resistance. The important thing is knowing which debts can, and should be negotiated, when finances become tight.
Credit Cards
As the most common source of debt among Americans, credit card debt can be fairly easy to negotiate with creditors. As in any negotiation, debtors may find that creditors are hesitant at first and that the burden of proof lies on them. Most creditors want to see two things before they will agree to negotiate debts. First, that the debtor is experiencing financial trouble. Second, that the debtor can afford to make payments as per the modified terms. Credit negotiations are most successful when the debtor can demonstrate their need for lowered payments, or modified payment terms, but also show they have some level of income to support these changes.
Student Loans
As one of the fastest growing sources of debt among Americans under the age of 30, student loan debt is reaching all time highs. Student loan debts often face many challenges as they are generally not eligible for discharge in bankruptcy. Most student loan debt borrowers find that negotiating directly with lenders is their best bet for finding a solution. Student loan lenders may be willing to offer a deferment, in which payments are temporarily suspended for a specified period of time. Deferments are given out for career changes, temporary medical illnesses, birth of a child or the startup of a new business. Borrowers experiencing long term financial hardships may be able to secure a forbearance or settlement agreement if they can demonstrate financial need.
Taxes
Most tax debts are also better negotiated directly with creditors as there are strict guidelines about their inclusion in a bankruptcy case. Most people are surprised to learn that the IRS offers several ways in which tax debts can be repaid. Taxpayers may dispute tax debt liabilities or request for a recalculation of tax liability of they feel there was an error. Those who can afford to repay their debts over time may be able to secure an installment plan agreement, in which they are given an average of two years to repay their debts. An Offer In Compromise is a type of tax debt settlement, in which the IRS agrees to accept less than the actual tax debt owed. These are generally reserved for those who cannot afford to repay their debts in full and are experiencing financial hardships.

Zombie Debts, a Discussion
Voodoo is an African belief that has transposed itself in America among the African-American population. In real terms Voodoo relates to the old tribal religions of Africa, from where it has originated. Part of the Voodoo belief is the Zombie. The Zombie refers to a person who though dead comes alive. It also means 'risen from the dead'. This word is also used in America to classify old and forgotten debts that have passed the statute of limitations. These debts that resurface after many years are often called Zombie debts.
Zombie debts are a reality in the United States and there are people who make it part of their business. These companies or individuals buy these debts at a heavy discount and try and make some money out of it. Some these debts are nearly 8-10 years old and yet they are bought by these collection companies.
Zombie Debts
The principle behind this business deal is simple. All debts at some point of time become uncollectable as they have passed the time period laid down in the statute of limitations. This time period could range from 3 to 7 years. This period varies from state to state. At this point collection companies who wish to make some money from this deal will buy the debt at a fraction of its value. It can be understood that older the debt the less its market value. Thus a debt over 8 years will cost a fraction of the money that would be paid for a debt that is 3 years old.
In earlier times the collection agents had a free field and could use any method to recover the outstanding debt. This could include threats and intimidation. However The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act passed in 1996 has put a premium on all forms of coercion. This act lays down the limits under which a collection agency can run and any infringement of this can be reported to the authorities. However there have been cases where the collection agents subvert this act to collect something out of the outstanding debt. Yet, despite this act, the debt that is very old does not debar collection agents from buying the debt and trying to recover it. The aim of the collection agent who has purchased the debt at a very, very low price is to recover a portion of the debt and thus make some money in the bargain.
Re-Aging Debts
These zombie debts can appear at any time and this is often referred to as re-aging of debts. This is illegal but it happens all the time. There have been cases recorded where an original debt that has been discharged in a bankruptcy re-appears as a Zombie debt. This re-aging of debts needs to be guarded against. But if it does happen some prudent action is required to contain the damage. Thus an individual need to be aware of the following.
a) He must as a rule check his credit report at regular intervals and see if any such entry is there. In case such an entry appears it is incumbent on the person to check with the credit bureau and get the entry rectified.
b) Be informed. The fact that you are not aware of the statute of limitations will not hold water. Thus in case contacted by a debt collector be aware of your rights and act so. You can follow-up by contacting your state's Attorney General's Office and the Better Business Bureau. This is not the end and it should be followed up by contacting the agency that issues the license to a collector in the state you live and complain about this 'zombie' debt that has been re-aged. Remember all collectors have to be licensed.
The debt - buying industry is lucrative business and information available shows that some of these collection companies have earned enormous sums of money running into thousands of dollars by purchasing Zombie debts. They will even purchase debts that have passed the statute of limitations and try and recover some part of the debt. There have been cases where a debtor with a 9-year-old debt has been approached by these agents. They thrive on the ignorance of the debtor and hold the fear of a prison term as well.
However it must be mentioned that after a 7 year period a debt cannot appear in your credit report. It does not matter whether the debt is still outstanding against your name or has lapsed. If such a thing happens then it is best to report this anomaly to the credit bureau. Remember that there is a good chance that the debt has already been written off, but collection agents will still buy it, as it is their business. They thus buy the debt at a few pennies to a dollar. The debt collectors know that the entire debt cannot be recovered and hence they will go in for a settlement, an adjustment where the debt owner pays only a part of the debt. But the basic ingredient on which these collector's thrive is ignorance and lack of information.
Though Zombie debts are illegal, yet they are very much a part of the American scenario. Thus in case you are approached by a debt collector for recovery of an old debt than the following steps may be taken.
a) Contact the credit bureau and report the wrong entry in the Credit report. Make it a point to demand documentary proof from the debt collector about the debt. The debt collector is under obligation to give this information within 30 days; in case he is unable to do so then you are home and dry.
b) In case a collector persists in his attempt to collect a bill that has been paid long back, or passed the statute of limitations then report him under the federal Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. The bill collector could end up paying a massive civil penalty as well as subject to fraud and harassment charges
Conclusion
Remember if the debt is only for a few thousand dollars and was incurred over 5 years back, then in all probability it is already written off. The statutes of limitations in some states in the USA is only 2 years and if there no court judgment against you in force then you are safe. But there is no doubt that Zombie debts do occur and as the USA is a free country their appearance cannot be stopped. But awareness is important.

Debt Management Tips to Consider
In these troubled economic times, many people are struggling with debt that is spinning out of control. Here are a few ideas for you to consider if your debt situation is causing you undue stress.
1. Get a handle on the amount of your current debt. There are debt relief calculators available on the net to help you figure out how long it will take you to pay off the debt and how much interest it will cost. Start with using a minimum payment, and then adjust it so you can see how much you can save by paying the debt off sooner. You can also plug in a date as your goal to being out of debt and see what those payments might be. You may be surprised to find it more manageable than you thought.
2. Consider a debt settlement program if your debt is over $10k. In many cases, a reputable debt relief company can negotiate the debt down for you to make it even more manageable. They can often negotiate a better deal than you can for yourself because they can combine your debt with other people's debts and thereby negotiate for a much larger sum.
3. Develop a budget you can live with, but make sure your outgoing expenses do not exceed your incoming revenue. Prioritize your debts and be sure to start an emergency fund if you don't already have one. Obviously, you do not want to incur more debt, and one way to do this is to have some money on hand for emergencies.
4. Try to find ways to cut down on expenses. Perhaps the cable bill could be adjusted by dropping some pay channels, or a different phone plan may work at a lower cost. Many people are over insured. Even the small items can add up and make a difference in your debt management.
5. Consider using online banking for the convenience, and make automatic payments wherever possible. This will help you stay current and relieve some of the burden of maintenance. Take care not to have too many bank accounts. One checking and one saving are usually sufficient, though if you travel for work, it might be wise to have a separate one for just those expenses.
6. If you area able to refinance a home, now would be a good time to do so. Rates have never been lower, and there is currently talk about loosening up the eligibility requirements. It is definitely worth looking into.
Debt management does not have to be painful. Try not to let the situation get you too depressed. There is help available and you are not alone. Stay focused on dealing with the debt and think about how great it will be to be debt free.

What Is A Debt Diet And How It Can Work For You
The 'debt diet' is a new phrase that has entered the conscious lexicon of the American vocabulary in recent years. We have in fact witnessed the birth of not only a new terminology - but indeed a new way of thinking about how it is we as consumers can best or at least better reduce our intake of debt and shed debt. To be perfectly clear, the rising debt burden facing consumers not only in America today but worldwide has reached epic proportions. The situation has caused many to weep for the future.
Origins
The origins of debt as we know it today can be traced back to the 1950's when the first credit card was introduced to a lucky few in America. It ushered in a new way of conducting business, commerce and consumerism in general - buy now and pay later. What could be better, or so we thought. In actuality what was unleashed upon the unsuspecting masses was a new indentured reality. Millions indeed have become slaves to the plastic they own in their wallets, purses and shoes due to the large dollar amount that is now owed to the credit card issuers, "the man" as it were.
What can be done about these truly shocking turn of events? Much in fact can be done. You see, the debt diet is a new way for better managing and paying down and paying off of debt not just from plastic but from other sources as well. We are referring to such financial obligation as can payments, mortgage payments, utilities, and monies owed to other nefarious characters such as loan sharks and even worse - family. The key to setting yourself free from debt today is believing that you and you alone have the power to change your circumstances. You alone can right your sinking financial ship. You alone can release the financial Kraken that has been hounding you for many years of your life.
The debt diet is many things, but essentially at its heart it involves accounting for all income and expenses meticulously, determining what the unnecessary expenses are that are draining your bank accounts and paying down your debt above and beyond the minimum monthly payments each month. Also, the debt diet espouses that we all make every effort to live within our means and avoid keeping up with the Jones - because most likely the Jones themselves might have a home that's underwater, they may have stopped making their mortgage payments altogether, and they may even be contemplating bankruptcy. So to heck with keeping up with the Jones. It is by following a strict debt diet that we are then able to shed debt in our lives.

Helpful Tips for Paying Down Your Debt
"Those who borrow are slaves of money lenders" (Proverbs 22:7). True to this bible verse, many consumers today have become slaves to credit card companies and other lending institutions because of the huge financial obligations that they have incurred. And most of these individuals are searching for ways by which they can pay down what they owe and soon liberate themselves from the bondage of debt.
Now, if you are a credit consumer, and you are looking for information on how you can settle your credit obligations, then this article is made just for you. Below, we have listed down several suggestions that you can use to gradually settle and eventually retire your existing credit accounts.
Four Tips for Credit Cardholders
• Try to pay more than the minimum monthly amount required by your card issuer. Keep in mind that paying just the minimum amount required by your card issuer can cause your interest charges to balloon out. So, if you are serious about your desire to pay down what you owe, in the soonest possible time, then try to consider how you can allocate more funds to pay off your monthly credit card bills.
• Come up with strategies that you can use to gradually pay down your credit accounts. To do this, you may decide to concentrate first on paying the debt that imposes the highest rate of interest. After all, this strategy is proven to help consumers save a great deal of money on interest charges. You may also decide to settle either the oldest or lowest credit transactions, whichever you find easier to pay off first.
• Alter your spending habits. It would be counterproductive for you to continuously use your credit card to finance your purchases as well as your monthly bills, especially when you have started working on your plan to get rid of your credit card debt. This means that you have to limit the use of your card account until you are able to fully retire your credit obligations. So, you may need to change your spending habits and activities, for the time being. For example, you should resolve to use cash to pay for all your transactions. And you may need to lay low on the use of the extra facilities of your card account, such as cash advance.
• Seek for professional assistance. You may also decide to seek professional help, especially if you do not have any prior experience in paying off huge credit card debt. Look for blogs and articles written by finance experts on how you can get rid of your debt, fast. You may also decide to sign up for credit counseling services. After all, a certified financial adviser can provide you with helpful tips that you can use not only to completely retire your financial obligations, but also to fully-rehabilitate your credit history.
Two Pointers for Borrowers
• Examine your personal finances and consider areas in your life where you can free up more funds. Spend considerable amount of time going over your personal finances and think of expenses that you can cut down. You can also look for cheaper alternatives for the products and services that you use so that you can allocate more funds to settle your credit installments.
• Take out a debt consolidation loan. In some cases, the best way to pay off a loan would require you to take out another loan, usually in the form of a debt consolidation program. With this line of credit, you can expect to receive ample funds that you can use to fully-retire your original credit account. In return, you will be asked to settle your loan in an installment basis, which will depend entirely on your financial capability.

How Debt Settlement Companies Avoid Federal Law
Debt settlement companies are famous for promising a world of help, but not actually delivering any. They know that the average person will be willing to pay just about anything in order to help and get themselves out of debt, so they charge astronomical fees for their assistance. The only problem is that they consumer pays, but they never actually deliver what they promise.
Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) was put into place in order to require them to reach at least minimum requirements in order to accept the fees paid by the consumer. This basically means that they are actually required to assist you. The rules and regulations have gotten so strict that many settlement companies have gone under because they were not actually prepared to do all of the work required to stay in business.
A strong effort has been made to limit the amount of compensation that a debt settlement company is allowed to collect. They will not be able to collect upfront fees, but will only be able to collect once they have successfully been able to settle the account. Since the majority of of the companies were charging fees upfront, this has put a lot of them out of business.
Not to be denied, some debt settlement companies are trying to get around the new Federal amendment, and the new FTC rules and regulations. The thrust of their efforts is to set up a new business model that would presumable limit their operations to intrastate (within a state) rather than interstate (more than one state). The Federal government has no jurisdiction over purely intrastate activities.
Because of the expansive nature of the US Supreme Court definition of interstate activities, this exercise by the debt settlement companies will be futile. The unfortunate reality for the American consumer is, however, that it may take many, many months for courts to make a legal determination as the correct legal status of a particular company. During this time they will keep operating outside the restrictions of the new amendment and the new rules and regulations. They will flourish while consumers continue to be abused.
There have been recent reports that some debt settlement companies, in an effort to place themselves beyond the jurisdiction of the United States government, thus negating any application of the new FDCPA amendment and the new FTC rules and regulations, are moving their operations off-shore. They are using the on-line betting industry as a model.

What You Don't Know About Mortgage Debt
Many people have faced mortgage debt and foreclosure in recent years. As the housing market crisis continues to challenge homeowners every day, more people are being forced into drastic measures to save their homes. Unfortunately, many people aren't able to secure a solution in time or, worse yet, simply don't know their rights when it comes to managing their mortgage debts.
Your Options
Choosing between mortgage debt solutions can be overwhelming. The best place to start is with a loan modification, in which you can negotiate changes to the terms of your existing loan that can significantly lower your monthly payment. Lenders can be stubborn with qualification standards for a loan modification, which may lead you to consider refinancing. This option may be able to lower your monthly payment, but be sure you can afford the out of pocket closing costs.
If you are unsure about your ability to maintain even a reduced monthly payment, consider requesting approval to enter a short sale. Selling the home in exchange for being absolved of your mortgage debt liability can protect your credit more so than allowing the home to enter foreclosure. Finally, a deed in lieu of foreclosure may be able to get you out from under your mortgage debt in exchange for signing over the deed to the lender. However, remember that this option is a last resort and should only be pursued if no other option is possible and foreclosure is imminent.
Your Rights
As a homeowner, you are afforded certain rights when it comes to dealing with lenders. Even in a non-judicial foreclosure state, lenders cannot simply foreclose on your home without following a few basic requirements. The trick to managing lenders is to know your rights and ensure they are following the rules.
First, lenders are required to provide you with written notification about an impending foreclosure. The amount of time allotted for these notifications varies by states, some as little as 30 days. However, your lender cannot initiate the foreclosure process without informing you in writing of your delinquency and their intent to foreclose.
Next, you have the right to request a mediation hearing with your lenders present. This hearing will allow you to sit down and discuss your loan options with your lender. To ensure you are getting the most from this hearing, consider hiring a foreclosure lawyer to represent you with such legal matters.
Last, remember that you have the right to negotiate a solution with your lender directly at any time. You may request options such as a loan modification, short sale or refinancing option in lieu of a foreclosure. If you are unable to secure a deal, consider one of several federal programs that are offered to assist homeowners. The HAMP and HARP are two programs developed by the government that can offer modifications or refinancing to homeowners that may not qualify under their lender's standards.

Debt Elimination and How to Safely Eliminate Your Debts
Many people who seek debt elimination services are inexperienced to the financial problem. Most of them are shy to admit their financial problems. They are even afraid to discuss it with anyone, but paying no attention to the problem can only aggravate things.
The first thing to do is prioritize your finances. You surely have financial obligations. Some of them are more pressing than the rest. Perhaps you can create a list of your debts and sort them out according to urgency. Settle the pressing debts first, then deal with the others later. You cannot deal with all of them at the same time, this is a basic strategy.
Limit your credit card use. Every time you use your credit card, you are actually using money you don't have. Overusing credit cards is one of the major reasons people fall into the vicious trap of debt. The problem is aggravated by using several credit cards. Own just one credit card as much as possible and use it sparingly.
Pay your debts. People with heavy debts tend to be overwhelmed. There is no better way to start dealing with your debts than to pay them. Manage your finances and obligations. This is easier said than done though, do not hesitate to ask help from professional debt elimination consultants. Elimination of debt may take a long time, especially if the amount of money borrowed is big. This period can be considered a transition period to a debt free life. Keeping yourself from borrowing money is necessary.
Spending within your means is absolutely recommended. People who have piles of debt find it extremely difficult to resist the temptation to buy. Consider your obligations first when the urge to buy enters your mind. During the debt elimination period, do not be tempted to make unnecessary purchases.
Exploiting your home equity may sometimes be a good option. People who want to refinance their mortgage may make use of their home equity. Of course, refinancing may mean additional costs and interest rates, but if this is a feasible way of freeing yourself from cumbersome debts, it should be considered. Then again, a home equity loan is only a fine recourse as long as you are determined to end your current debt.
You also could consider borrowing from friends or family. Think about how people close to you can help. See if you can borrow money from them at a low interest rate. Agreements between you and whoever you are borrowing money from should be on paper. This is perhaps a more convenient means of paying off your existing debt than obtaining home equity loan. But remember that this new debt is still a debt and should be paid off.
When possible, negotiate loan terms with your lenders. A lot of lenders are willing to restructure debts if the borrower is sincere in repaying the loan. Oftentimes, you may need the assistance of a professional debt negotiator.
Huge debts can lead to loss of property and years of financial hardships when not managed accordingly. This is why financial advisers reiterate the importance of proper financial management. The alternative to having big debts is to not spend money you do not possess.

Are Instant Decision Credit Cards Your Best Option?
Many people will someday find themselves in need of finding instant decision credit cards. There are those who simply could not wait for a long time to see if their application is approved or not. And others who have an instant need for an emergency expense. With these types of cards, it is now possible for you to get your decision sometimes in a fast as 60 seconds. When you are accepted, you will be able to use the card as soon as it arrives in your mailbox. Some companies even provide express delivery. But, if you are not approved, you will have to go for other options. Usually, those who apply for instant decision credit cards are those who are in desperate need of fast money. As the approval is instant, the card can be used immediately for different transactions.
In order to have an application granted for most cards, you must have a good credit score. If you have an excellent credit rating, you will not need to worry about an application approval. If you have an okay or average credit score, your application might also be granted easily. You just need to pay special attention if you have a bad credit score. If this is your situation, you need to look for cards that specifically state that bad credit is accepted. If they make no mention of this, then you probably should not waste the time applying. This will only create an unnecessary credit inquiry and reduce your chances of getting a card with someone who would approve you in your current situation.
Given this, it is important for you to take a look at your credit score first before completing any application. Take note that there are some companies that are really strict before giving their approval. If you are confident of this your current credit scores, go ahead and apply. If not, you definitely have to check out your credit reports and see how you rate. Take note that when you are rejected, it will come across as an inquiry on your reports. This can affect your credit scores. When you apply for credit cards or any other transactions the next time around, your chances of getting approved might be reduced, so only apply for cards whose qualifying criteria match your current situation.
If possible, try to apply for instant decision credit cards only if you are in need of money right away. Plus, if this is your current case, you may want to check out some other loan options as well. However, if you just don't want to wait for your credit card to be approved, these are definitely an excellent option. Again, as mentioned earlier, when you are confident about the results, you really have nothing to lose. If not, you should probably think of other options, such as credit cards for bad credit. Again, you will know this, because they will say that they accept bad credit.
Before you make any hasty decisions, it is really important for you to determine your necessity in making applications for instant decision credit cards along with the possible downside if you are declined. But if this is what you need, then carefully look at the offers and find one that looks like it is best suited for you and your current credit scores before you complete any application.

Can Prepaid Cards Replace Traditional Credit Cards?
Prepaid Cards vs. Credit Card Transactions
Your prepaid account purchases are funded from an account that's similar to a checking account. You can't make any purchases with the card unless you've first deposited money into the account. And, once you've spent all the money in the account, you can't make additional purchases until you make another deposit.
Traditional credit purchases, on the other hand, are funded from a line of credit that the bank has made available to you. Your credit issuer pays the merchant for your account's purchases and you, in turn, repay the issuer at some point in the future.
A key difference between prepaid cards and traditional cards is that you pay first with prepaid cards and later with credit cards. With a prepaid card, you're spending your own money and with a traditional card you're spending the bank's money, with the understanding that you'll pay it back.
Building Credit With Credit Cards
Because you don't have a credit line with a prepaid card, your transactions aren't posted to your credit report. Therefore, a prepaid card won't help you rebuild a bad score and the card won't help you qualify for future credit. But, reckless spending with a prepaid account won't hurt your credit score; it will just leave you broke.
If you book a hotel or rent a car with a prepaid card, you may have to pay an extra deposit or have a temporary hold placed on extra funds on the card. These types of "authorization holds" are less common when you pay with a traditional card.
And Secured Credit Cards
A secured card has features of both a prepaid card and a credit card. Secured cards are often a great choice for people who need to rebuild their credit because these cards approve applicants with less than stellar credit histories.
Like prepaid accounts, secured credit cards require a deposit. However, the secured credit deposit is just a one-time payment that "secures" credit line. After that security deposit is made, the secured credit behaves just like a regular credit. Purchases are made against the credit limit and you'll make payments toward your balance. It's like borrowing money from yourself and then paying it back. The plus side is that most secured credit cards are reported to the credit bureaus and your use of the card can help rebuild a bad credit history.
Prepaid accounts definitely have a target customer - prepaid account issuers would eventually stop offering their product to the public if no one wanted them. However, for rebuilding a bad credit history or creating a brand new credit history, a prepaid card is not a good option. You'll need a traditional account with a credit limit - either secured or unsecured - if you want your card use to impact your credit score.

What to Do When You Have Zombie Debt Pursuing You
What happens to debt that people are unable to pay back? A lot of the time, the banks just have to stamp them as uncollectable and write them off. They just give up trying to get those people to pay up. People who owe money and who cannot pay it back have traditionally been able to heave a sigh of relief to know that the bank has got off their case. But not anymore. The banks have found a way to give these uncollectable loans a new lease of life; almost. They call these zombie debt these days.
The bank will usually stop trying to harass you for an outstanding debt once it's tried for six years without success. There's actually a statute of limitations on loans. You're not even legally required to pay a loan back once it's six years past the last time you paid an installment. Shady debt collection companies though are happy to buy the right to collect these loans from the banks for very little money and come after you with renewed vigor all over again; kind of the way zombies get up out of the grave and start to follow you around.
Zombie debt collectors usually pay the banks about 3% of the face value of each loan. That means that for every $5000 that a deadbeat borrower owes the bank, these debt collectors will pay $150. If the zombie debt collectors can even get one out of 25 deadbeat borrowers to pay up, they would turn a profit.
So what are you supposed to do if one of these wonderful people should try to contact you for a zombie debt that you're not legally required to pay back anymore?a loan that doesn't even show up on your credit report anymore? Should you bother paying it back?
The first thing you want to do when you are contacted over the phone for zombie debt is to completely deny that the debt is yours. Frequently, they'll just try to call anyone out of the phone book to try to trick them into believing that the loan is theirs. With zombie debt, they often don't have the address of the person they are trying to collect from.
It has to be reflexive; when anyone calls about the loan that you aren't completely sure is current, you have to automatically deny it's yours. If you show the slightest amount of hesitation, they can use that as proof that you do owe them something. All you need to do is to ask them to send you proof. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act requires that they provide you with this kind of proof.
If you do send you proof, you need to see what you can do about it. If you ever declared bankruptcy, it's possible that these lenders never got news of it. You just have to send them a copy of the discharge order.
Beyond the statute of limitations, other than wanting to be an honest person and pay your debts, there is really no real reason why you should pay anything. It doesn't even affect your credit anymore. Sometimes, they try to trick you by telling you that you only have to pay a small part of what you owe and they'll let you go. If you do this though, this restarts the statute of limitations all over again and you'll find yourself owing everything.
