Paying Your Debt In 5 Easy Steps
The growing issues of national and personal debts can be intimidating. But people need to understand that debts are not really a bad thing, they are essential especially if you are an entrepreneur, but they need to be managed well. Before you learn and start how to handle or manage your debts, you have to first understand the different kinds of debts:
Good debts - debts or borrowed money that was used for business or investment purposes. Any loan made for this reason is considered "good" because the business itself can pay for the money, on top of your active income from work. (Unless of course, the business failed)
Bad debts - debts made for other reasons such as educational loans, house or car loans, credit card purchases of your new phone, new television or even your weekly grocery. This credit will be paid from your active income that is why it is called bad or hard debt.
Debts can be worrisome and may cause distress to you and your family. If not properly taken cared of, they can be a real problem. Here are some tips that you can follow so that you can easily manage and pay off your debts:
Identify what kind of debt or debts you have. If you have a good debt and your business is still running then, you will pay that debt from your business alone. If on the other hand, you are not in business, then just tally your loans and see how much you need to pay.
If you have mounting credit card bills, try negotiating with the bank. They usually offer smaller installments and smaller interest rates. Ask your banks what they can offer to help you pay off your debt easily. They usually give better payment terms.
Allot a percentage of your monthly income for debt payments, about 30 percent. If you feel that your salary is not enough to cover for your necessities plus debt payments, then you need to consider getting another source of income -- possibly a home based business, a part-time job or a freelance position.
Do keep in contact with your creditors. Whether they are private lending companies or family and friends, they need to be assured that you have every intention to pay for your loans. Integrity is really important.
You can try borrowing the total amount, pay off your creditors and have a clearer plan on how you can pay for this new debt. This is like debt consolidation on a small-scale. But this should be your last option as it might be a start of another set of problems.
The idea here is simple, pay off the small amounts first and renegotiate the bigger amounts. Get another source of income (preferably a part-time business) so that you do not need to tighten your belt even more. The next time to think of getting a loan, ask yourself if it is a good debt or a bad debt. Go ahead if it is a good debt, if it is a bad debt, think twice, if not thrice. Handling you money must become a habit. It is not easy, but it is doable.
